married quarters.

Police efforts from the outside were

directed to confine the madman to the first floor of the

Station. The Inspector-General of Police (Mr. Wolfe),

arrived at Lok Ma Chau about 10.30 p.m. Up to this time,

although no shots had been heard from the Station for

some hours, there was no means of knowing where B. 543 was

located or whether he was alive or dead. In fact the

rescue parties believed that he had been seen moving in the

Compound as late as 9.00 p.m. After surveying the

situation and making certain dispositions of Police, the

Inspector General of Police decided to enter the Station

about 11.30 p.m. He and his party entered by the back

gate. The party found the dead body of Indian Police

Constable B.9 Chhajja Singh close to the back door of the

Barrack Room in which the Indian Police had taken shelter

in the Station. On the first floor, front verandah, they

found the dead body of Indian Police Constable B. 543 Dalip

Singh. He had obviously committed suicide by shooting

himself with his own rifle. In the back sitting room in

Sergeant Madgwick's quarters, the dead body of Mrs.

Madgwick was found. The medical evidence indicated that

Indian Police Constable B.543 Dalip Singh had been dead

for less than five hours.

The Coroner's Enquiry made it clear that Mrs.

Madgwick could have been saved only if the Station Guard,

Indian Police Constable B.722 Gurbaxsh Singh nad grasped

the whole significance of the situation immediately Indian

Police Constable B. 543 had fired his first shot and had

himself shot dead Indian Police Constable B. 543 Dalip

Singh on the spot. Once the madman had gained the first

floor of the Station, it was impossible to have saved Mrs.

Madgwick.
